Embolden understand the needs of nonprofit organizations. Embolden president, Ann-Marie Harrington, MSW, has built a company that appreciates how technology can be best employed for online community building. We can show you how to harness the medium of the Internet to manage your membership, to raise money, organize groups for action, sign up event participants, obtain feedback, identify prospects and interact with constituents and clients. Using middleware, Embolden can extract data from FIMS (the Foundation Information Management System) to build dynamic applications to better manage your organization. Embolden provides high-level consulting on all your needs, including information design and architecture.

CHALLENGE: ConnCAN, an outreach, education, and research organization, came to Embolden as a start-up nonprofit that needed a dynamic web application to illustrate school achievement in every school district in Connecticut. The site would need to be updated on a regular basis and appeal to a diverse group of users: parents, teachers, students, and business and community leaders. SOLUTION: Embolden designed a database-driven web application to present reams of information on achievement in Connecticut schools. Using Matriarch, Embolden’s proprietary content-management system, ConnCAN can easily update content. Additionally, Embolden created online membership capabilities so that members can log in and see content specialized for them.

CHALLENGE: HousingWorks RI was a start-up initiative of The Rhode Island Foundation, working to address the state’s shortage of quality, affordable housing. They were seeking online solutions for targeted community outreach. SOLUTION: Embolden exported HousingWorks RI’s membership data from FIMS (the Foundation Information Management System) and mapped it to a robust, scalable online CRM (customer relationship management) application. The feature-rich CRM allows the organization to manage its membership, who can post news, sign up for events, find experts, or volunteer to serve on committees. It also includes an integrated enews management system. The UI design for this project was created by Orange Square Design.

CHALLENGE: Facing a quick turnaround, WETA, Public Broadcasting for Greater Washington, asked Embolden to design a website to support a television series it was presenting that examines innovative ways of ensuring that all public school students are prepared for higher education. Embolden had already developed a site for Roundtable Inc., of Waltham, MA., which produced “The College Track: America’s Sorting Machine” for American Public Television and developed a national engagement campaign to push the issue of education equity to the fore. WETA also needed original content for its site. SOLUTION: In short order, Embolden designed an intuitive and graphically rich format for WETA. Further, Embolden's senior web editor, with 20 years of experience reporting and editing, provided original content about the documentary as well as compelling background and research about the issue of education equity.

CHALLENGE: Roundtable Inc., of Waltham, MA, was dedicated to pushing the issue of education equity to the fore following the release of the documentary series "The College Track: America’s Sorting Machine" for American Public Television. Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Andre Braugher, the series explored America's commitment to equal access to higher education through the stories of students struggling to become the first in their families to attend college. SOLUTION: Embolden designed the site, including a dynamic Flash element on the homepage that illustrated the way young people are sorted for the college track. Additionally, we created the site architecture to promote campaigns designed to spark community-wide initiatives to help students prepare for and succeed in college and to propel the issues of education equity and systemic education reform to the top of the nation’s agenda. By using the website, participants could download materials to use locally, learn what was happening in their communities and more about the issues in general.

CHALLENGE: Simply put: Girl Scouts of Rhode Island wanted the best Girl Scout website in the country. SOLUTION: Embolden shared their vision. We developed a fresh and exciting website befitting an organization that does so much for girls in Rhode Island. Our project managers worked closely with the Girl Scouts to organize content, create the site architecture and user interface. And then we trained them on Matriarch, our content-management system so they could keep the site up-to-date on everything from camp schedules to cookie sales.
Embolden embraced our project with enthusiasm and suggested several upgrades and automated features that would drastically reduce the time and energy needed to maintain the site, including an RSS feed. The company clearly cares as much about client relationships as it does its products. Kate Brewster Executive Director The Poverty Institute
