Our inaugural poll on our new Embolden website, asked: "Many organizations are beginning to expand their online presence with a Facebook page. Does yours have one?"
Seventy-four percent of the folks who responded said they do have Facebook pages. As for those who don't, here's one more reason to consider joining: Facebook signed up its 200 millionth member today.
Facebook has posted a great video that helps you wrap your head around that number. For instance, it took humankind 20,000 years to grew to a population of 200 million. And if Facebook was a country, it would be the fifth-largest in the world.
There can be no doubt left about the potential of this social networking tool. Doing good, mobilizing people, advocating, changing the world, that's what our clients' missions are all about. And Facebook is a powerful example of how technology can help make that happen.
Facebook likes to say: "We can do some good." And it has started to document results in its Facebook for Good page. So far, there's a story about a teen saved from a drug overdose, a birth mother reunited with her son, a kidney donor found. There's plenty of reason to think success stories on a larger scale will follow.
If you've got an example of how your nonprofit or community foundation has benefited by having a Facebook page, we'd love to hear about it. Let us know and we'll share the information...on our Facebook page.
